The plural of moose is...reindeer?

I've been lusting over this amazing Olympic hat since I first saw it mentioned (I no longer recall by which of my favourite knit-bloggers/tweeters). But $65 is a bit of an absurd price-tag, even for designer knitwear. So I spent a cozy morning in bed with my cup of coffee and reverse-engineered the pattern from the photos. And a clever commentator on Ravelry pointed out to me, those aren't moose, they're reindeer! So, I am pleased to bring you the Olympic Reindeer Hat as a free ravelry download!

  5. Oh, man. Thank you! I'm not much of a knitter but I wanted one of these as soon as I saw them for my husband. He will love it. So I have to learn to knit better or find a good knitter to do it for me. Thank you so much, I didn't want to spend $75 for a hat!

  6. They look like moose to me -- I'm from Maine. Reindeer have narrower muzzles.

There's a reindeer on this page, the muzzle is quite different.

  7. They are not moose. I live in Alaska - Moose have flat palms, not branches in their racks. :)

They are reindeer - domesticated - or caribou - wild.

But, reindeer, caribou, moose (also plural moose) it's a mighty fine rendition of the Olympic hat. THANK YOU! :)

  9. As soon as I saw our athletes wearing those hats during the Opening Ceremonies, I HAD to find the pattern. I emailed my local knitting group about it and wonderful Zita found it on Ravelry and sent me the link! Thanks, Zita!!! You made my day!

  11. I, too, would like to know where you got the flag patch?

Also, went on one of the Cascade sites & #8887 was listed as a deep purple & # 9494 was listed as ruby??

  12. Thank you all for your enthusiasm and support!

8393 (dark navy) is probably the best blue to use. I didn't have any at the shop so I subbed with a brighter blue. 8887 is a bright/deep royal blue, and I assume you mean 9404, which is a nice deep red. The color cards can be seen on the Cascade site: http://www.cascadeyarns.com/cascade-220.asp

The patch was one I had in my stash. I got a whole mess of patches years ago from some online shop (I hunted high and low for the stoplight patches used in 'The Life Aquatic' shortly after the movie came out, and bought a bunch)

  13. Oh yes, and as for the chart, no written version, sorry :(

Just change colors where it's indicated in the chart.

  14. If you have a police/fire/ems/sheriff uniform shop near you, they have USA patches in various sizes as required for uniforms. Also, those with access to a clothing&sales on the military base should also have some luck with a patch there.

  23. All those flags appear to be too large.
I am a professional embroiderer. I'll see what I can come up with. I've done flags that small on racing uniforms.

    There is one with a white border: 2 1/2 x 1 1/2
Pretty perfect I'd say. $1.40 Can't go wrong. Yes, I did order 5, but since I have so much yarn, I will make more than one hat anyway~!

  25. Let us know how they work for you!
I think that is still a bit too big, but could be wrong.

  26. I am making the hat now and it's turning out very nicely. Just one question - do you strand the navy blue loosely on the back of the work while making the reindeer? Isn't it possible the blue will show through?

  27. Thank you for this pattern. My husband is thrilled he will no longer have to listen to me whine about not being able to find the hat. And I will smile the whole time I'm making i 'cause I didn't have to pay Ralph Lauren for it. :-)
