I am making the hat now and it's turning out very nicely. Just one question - do you strand the navy blue loosely on the back of the work while making the reindeer? Isn't it possible the blue will show through?

If you have a police/fire/ems/sheriff uniform shop near you, they have USA patches in various sizes as required for uniforms. Also, those with access to a clothing&sales on the military base should also have some luck with a patch there.

8393 (dark navy) is probably the best blue to use. I didn't have any at the shop so I subbed with a brighter blue. 8887 is a bright/deep royal blue, and I assume you mean 9404, which is a nice deep red. The color cards can be seen on the Cascade site: http://www.cascadeyarns.com/cascade-220.asp

The patch was one I had in my stash. I got a whole mess of patches years ago from some online shop (I hunted high and low for the stoplight patches used in 'The Life Aquatic' shortly after the movie came out, and bought a bunch)
