Clever Knits yarn store permanently closed its doors on May 15, 2011.

We still knit the first Tuesday of every month from 7-10pm in the "Maté Attic" at the Yellow Deli, 315 E. Broadway, in Vista.

Changes

You'll notice a few things are different here on our website. Some fairly major changes to the layout, and we now have an online shop! Perhaps the most exciting feature of the shop is that you can now register for classes online. We've also made some changes to the pricing structure for our classes - but don't be fooled, most are actually cheaper!

For example, Crochet 101 and Knit 101 are now $25 (they were formerly $12, or $18 if you bought your supplies elsewhere). I hear grumblings: What? That is not cheaper! But wait - they now include all your supplies: yarn, hook or needles, and even a darning needle. All packaged together in one happy round number. No surprise costs, no mysterious extras. And you can sign up online! No need to call or come in ahead of time, just add to your cart and voila! You are enrolled.

A few of our other classes were $24 or $27, so to make things less confusing many of our course offerings got rounded to $25. We still offer classes at different price points, and you'll see those in the online shop, too.

Ready to get shopping? Click the 'SHOP' link at the top of the page! It's open for business. In the coming weeks, our online selection will be increased, so you'll see new items and categories appearing all the time. If you run into any trouble, just give us a jingle or drop an email - our contact info is always at the top of the website.

Project: Toybox!

If you follow my Ravelry feed, you may have noticed that I've been crocheting up a storm lately (that's right, I said CROCHET!). I've taken it upon myself to add some amigurumi darlings to our toybox full of undersea creatures:

Those of you who have come by the shop with tiny humans in tow know that we've had a secret little box filled with undersea creatures since we opened - mostly hyperbolic crochet forms (which we have called "sea anemones"), plus a starfish, a giant sea snake, and a few other lovely contributions. The box recently got an upgrade, thanks to a marvelous customer's husband who is quite a talented woodworker.

So I've put myself to work making the contents of the toybox as fantastic as the container itself. To this end, I have gathered a box filled with wooly bits, leftover string, and fluff, and would LOVE if any of you would be willing to help me crochet or knit some aquatic life for the toybox!

An Easier Heel

My new favourite, basic sock pattern - similar to All The Math, but with a much easier heel (hence it's name). This pattern features my favourite heel for toe-up socks: Wendy Johnson’s gusset heel. In my opinion, it’s the simplest and most effective heel.

The pattern includes instructions for 5 different sock sizes on 3 different needle sizes. Note that millimeter measurements can correspond to different US needle sizes, so it is important to make sure your needles match the millimeter measurement.

Materials:
  • 100g sock-weight yarn
  • 1 circular needle, 32” or longer (40” is best), size 2mm, 2.5mm, or 3mm
Sizing:
  • 2mm needles: Sizes XS (S, M); Foot circumference 6.25 (7.25, 8.25); 9.25 sts per inch
  • 2.5mm needles: Sizes S (M, L); Foot circumference 7.25 (8.25, 9.25); 8.5 sts per inch
  • 3mm needles: Sizes M (L, XL); Foot circumference 8.25 (9.25, 10.25); 7.75 sts per inch
Notes:
For men’s socks, I recommend working size L (men’s M) or XL (men’s L). Gauge is measured on un-stretched, un-blocked swatch. Foot circumference is measured at the widest point, usually around the ball of the foot. These socks have approximately 1” of negative ease.
